11th Doctor

You know guys... I'm about 7 episodes in to his first season and I'm just not feeling Matt Smith as The Doctor on Doctor Who. His FIRST episode was great. He was kinda bad-ass and assertive in a way that David Tennant wasn't (well, except sometimes). But that didn't last long. Now he's just kinda... Well, the main thing is that he doesn't seem all that self-assured or particularly brilliant most of the time. He errs on the goofy side and you get the sense that he's sort of bumbling around.

I liked David Tennant's cocky-yet-good-natured (sometimes tortured) genius. I even liked Christopher Eccleston's super-intensity. But I haven't found that *thing* that really makes me like Matt Smith yet.

I'm willing to give it time. I could warm up to the goofy.

Amy Pond, on the other hand, is quite great as his companion. Competent and stubborn and smart-alecky. I haven't seen *enough* of Rory yet to judge his character.

Martha Jones was a totally underrated companion. I think she had the most potential--she was smart in her own right (doctor!) and accomplished and quick--up until they somehow decided that it would be great for her character to make her central story arc falling in love with The Doctor in a one-sided way. That sort of ruined it. I liked her better than Rose or even Donna, though. Amy might win out as my favorite yet. We shall see.

We shall see, indeed.

My problem with Matt Smith is that he looks like he's 12. And he's annoying. I haven't seen all of his previous episodes or any of the current season because I just don't like him. I'll probably watch the one with the Triceratops on the spaceship at some point, but that's about it. I can wait until next doctor and not lose much sleep over it.

He *is* too young. David Tennant was *almost* too-young looking and then they went...younger. And a bit dimmer.

I'll still watch through, because he's not all bad--there are definitely some bright spots--and the base concepts for the episodes are still good. It's just that The Doctor isn't quite as smart or charming.

I am still lukewarm with Matt Smith. I don't know why, he has some good episodes but for some reason I don't like him as much as the others.

My favorite companion is Donna. It wasn't that way until I rewatched her season and realized how awesome her season is. Zach's favorite is Martha though the hotness of Amy gets her lots of points, I think.

I didn't like Donna's shriekier moments, but I *did* like that there wasn't that hopelessly-in-love-with-The-Doctor thing going on like there was with Martha Jones (ruined her character!).

Amy is cute and I find myself charmed by her even though, you know, her being cute doesn't actually matter that much to me. Maybe it's the accent.

Her accent is very charming.

The thing about Donna is you realize that she is rather shocked by a lot of things about the doctor but she also accepts him. Really, she is the first real friend he has. Not even Amy is that way with him.

Donna ranks above Rose for me (though I liked her too). I think she might even rank above Martha for me in reality (but not in potential!). Amy has yet to place. It's kinda too early for me to tell with her. I haven't had a companion that I actively disliked or anything.

Donna is unique because of the friend factor. She doesn't want to shag him, she doesn't want to marry him. She can just be his friend. That's a nice dynamic.

I started off watching in a really scattershot fashion -- specific recommended episodes, Christmas specials, random ones that happened to be on, that kind of thing. And although David Tennant is my favourite of what I've seen of the recent Doctors, I'm totally fine with Matt Smith. All of which is to say, I think he must improve? I suspect his episodes that I've seen are all more recent, and they seem fine!

I'm willing to keep on keeping on. Doctor Who is already better than a *lot* of tv out there, so I can't really complain too much about a specific actor.
