On the way to work this morning, I saw the same cat that I saw on the way home last night. Last night it was alive and running in the streets, this morning it was...well, still in the street.

It's not like it was a wild cat--it had a collar and looked well fed. I've said it before, but if people are already okay with the premise of keeping an animal as a pet, then they have to be okay with keeping the animal (particularly if said animal is small and prone to wandering outside a fence) in the house 24/7 in the city. It's too densely populated to let your cat out in urban Saint Paul. Sorry.

I don't care if you feel it's unfair to the cat. It's pretty unfair that in cat vs. car, the car will most always win. I don't care if your cat really, really wants to go outside, or you feel it should hunt. It's your PET now, not a barn cat. UGH. The whole thing just made me sad--and reinforced my convictions that my two babies won't ever feel the (outdoor) grass beneath their paws.

Additionally: Someone took the last piece of chocolate from my candy jar. Yeah, it's there for everyone to eat, but seriously...the last piece. That's just cruel. When I left last night there were 3 pieces...now there are none, and I really needed a bit of chocolate this morning.

Also: I'm too old to stay up until 2 consistently, get up for work, and expect to be functioning at normal levels. It seems to me that I used to be able to do this, and do this quite well. Now, not so much.

Grass under the paws.

I've been thinking of taking an old cookie sheet and putting some sod on it, then putting in in a windowsill for the cats to play on. I don't see that as being too terribly different from taking care of a potted plant, and it's a lot more fun for the furballs to play with.

At one point I bought some "cat grass" seed at PetSmart and planted it in a largish, shallow dish. The cats really seemed to enjoy it (both playing/laying on it and chewing on it). It only lasted 1-2 months or so even with the best of care--but it wasn't that expensive.

Re: the sod idea--as a former Franks plant girl--put down a layer of topsoil or potting soil before the sod--it tends to need more dirt to grow in than is provided in the sod roll.

Oh! And be careful what sod you buy--many of them contain fertilizers. It shouldn't be that big a deal either way, but it's something to be aware of if cats are going to be coming into continual contact with it.

It sucks when suddenly you go from only needing 4-5 hours a night to 6 (of course, I know many people, including my wife, who need 7-8).

But who knows, maybe you'll catch a generational second wind. I seem to be doing ok on 14 hours of sleep over the past 3 nights.

I certainly hope that this need/inadequacy is temporary. It seems like I CAN make do on very little sleep for short periods of time (like 2 hours a night for a week), but I notice definite deficits--in particular in verbal aptitude.

Me talk ugly sometimes when tired.

2 hours a night for a week??

I bow before you. You're like a sleep camel.

Oh, that was only out of extreme necessity. I'm not proud of it, nor of most of the sentences that came out of my mouth during that time. It was a jumble--and I had to still try to assemble complete thoughts in front of the client...and try not to nod off backstage.

UGH, now I'm remembering how much I hated that show.
