All we are saying: Give Peas a Chance.
Jun. 20th, 2007 12:01 pmI was eating fresh snap-peas (in the pod) last night when our youngest cat hopped onto my lap, grabbed a pea pod out of the bowl, dragged it to the floor and proceeded to devour it. This is just one example of a growing pea obsession amongst the ranks. More so than turkey or cheese, if I have peas--in any form--on my person or breath I can guarantee that Puck will try to get said peas and eat them. He goes mad for them, absolutely batshit crazy.
This proves that he is truly MY cat, since Derrick won't touch peas.
But anyway, I started thinking that maybe it wasn't GREAT for my cat to be eating peas. So I went online and did a little research. It turns out that while onions, garlic, tomatoes, tuna, chocolate and milk are bad for cats, peas are pretty much okay.
In fact, there are entire groups of people dedicated to making vegan cat food for their cats...and they utilize peas in all sorts of recipes.
Wait...people make vegan cat food for cats? Being a quasi-vegetarian myself (while I'll eat meat and have nothing against it, my tastes naturally gravitate towards fruits, veggies and pastas) I can understand people wanting to have a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. However, imposing said lifestyle on a CAT--a natural carnivore--seems outrageous to me. What gives people the right to withhold meat from a carnivore who NEEDS meat in their diet? Soybeans and nuts really don't cut it (though they make decent human substitutes I'm sure).
I think of all those poor meat-deprived kitties having to sneak nibbles of household mice, and it makes me a bit angry. I think I'll stick to giving my cats meat-type-food...with a limited amount of peas thrown in for good measure.
