You know how I know you're gay?

pen_gruntLast Friday, my boss and I went down to the little skyway coffee shop to get some java. The following is an actual conversation:
Me: So what are you going to do this weekend?
Boss: I dunno, maybe I'll go see a movie.
Me: Really, which one?
Boss: I'm not sure, but I'm NOT going to see Brokeback Mountain.
Me: Why not, I heard it was really good. I want to go see it.
Boss: Well, I'm not really...you know...there are guys....
Coffee dude: It has girls in it too you know--mostly unclothed.
Boss: *perks up* Really?
Coffee dude: Yeah..
Me: You've seen it? Is it good?
Coffee dude: Yeah, I saw it.
Boss: Was it good?
Coffee dude: *considers for a long moment* Well, it was kinda gay. *shrugs*
Me: *giggles uncontrollably*
Coffee dude: Well, I mean...there are girls in it too. It's good, but dude, it's kinda gay.
It amused me. Maybe you had to be there :)
Also on Friday, I'm filing this under the MOST Minnesota-Passive-Aggressive way to let someone know their head's on the chopping block:
We got a new fancy-schmancy logo, and so my boss ordered business cards for everyone--I mean everyone--even me! Well, the business cards get here, and this particularly inept woman happens to get nosy when Boss-man is sorting through them and hanging over his shoulder and such. After a few minutes of trying to help "hand out" the new business cards, she looks at Boss-man and asks, "Hey, where are my business cards?"
Boss-man just stammers. He didn't get her any b/c he didn't want to waste the $100 on someone that was going to be fired in a few weeks. *gulp* This should make life around her just that much more interesting. . .
And finally...
I finished reading "The Color of Magic" on Saturday night. I'd give it a 3.5-4 out of 5. It was enough to make me want to continue with Terry Prachett's "Discworld" series. It was funny, it was enjoyable, but I wasn't ready for it. My reading had, as of late, been consumed by large series.
First it was Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series (~1000+ pages a book, 6 books)--good series, "compulsively" readable (yes really) with a little more bodice-ripping than I usually care for. Not that I'm opposed to bodice ripping occurring, or even bodice ripping in general--but it was getting a tad Danielle Steel-ish, if ya know what I mean. The first three books were excellent and addicting, the next two were....uh...lullish. I mean, there's a lot of breastfeeding going on, but I don't remember THAT much else. 3.5 out of 5 on the whole series.
Next it was Robin Hobb's "Assassin" and "Fool" series. (~600-800+ pages a book, 6 books.) Both series are about the same characters, set about 15 years apart. There are 3 novels in between that are set in the same world, but without the same characters--as silly as it sounds, I haven't yet been able to read this for fear of "missing" the characters too much. I was completely addicted to these books. They're fabulous. One of the ONLY series that I'll still dream about. They share a few traits with GRRM's ASOIAF series, but I'm not sure where these traits originate (Hobb's books "come first" but the idea of animal/human sentience is hardly a new one.) 5 out of 5 on the whole series.
Then I read George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. (~800-1000+ pages a book, 4 books so far...). Yet another series that completely sucked me in and spit me out half-chewed. It's highly addicting. Like crack. Seriously. 4.5 out of 5 on the whole series (points deducted for making me wait 3-4 years in between novels)
So, you can imagine that I'm not really up for reading another 30+ books out of the same series. Discworld will have to wait for me for a bit. I'm sure it'll keep.

Date: 2006-02-20 06:17 pm (UTC)That said, I'd say 4 out of 5 on the whole, and because of the nature of the books, it's easy (and frankly better in a lot of ways) to spread them out over time, IMHO.
