Holla back girl
May. 7th, 2014 01:34 pmWhile I was running yesterday some dude tried to get me to stop and talk to him by SHOUTING AT ME.
This is not unusual. I kind of don't understand it; I look like total ass while running, so it clearly isn't about me. (And I am CERTAINLY not focused on pickin' up dudes.) But guys do this a lot. Honk. Yell. Shout. Etc. Catcalls are pretty old-school, but the principle is the same.
It has to work SOMETIME or you'd think they wouldn't do it. But I don't know if having it "work" is the point at all.
Mostly I just do what I can do: Ignore it and keep running. But it makes me all jumpy and it can jolt me out of my focused state, depending on how persistent they are. It makes me feel all on-alert, like I have to brace myself for something...and sometimes I do, "Come ON, come talk to me!!!" and sometimes it's just more honking or whatever.
Friday, D and I put on hockey jerseys and walked to a Downtown Saint Paul bar for the Wild game. (He wanted to watch and I wanted to go out. It was an excellent compromise.) As we were walking along, people would honk at us.
Our reactions to this were TOTALLY different. D--not used to being honked at on the street--would do some kind of "Go Wild!" sportsish gesture. I would jump and tense and hunch.
He didn't think twice about being honked/yelled at. I, clearly, have been conditioned to be very apprehensive about this.
