I've run out of garden to garden
May. 21st, 2013 01:38 pmI got all my seeds and such in the ground right before our 90-degree day, which gave them all a nice blast of heat and now they're getting rain and everything is popping up like magic. Satisfying, satisfying magic.
I tossed in a bunch of old seeds (5+ years old) thinking that they wouldn't germinate, or that the rate of germination would be quite low. Guess what? I have my mom's black-thumb touch, apparently. She will toss all sorts of crap in the garden and everything will grow, and grow beautifully. She tossed a bunch of 10-15 year old cucumber seeds out in a non-weeded, non-plowed field, forgot about them, and weeks later found a bumper crop of cucumbers.
Here's the thing, though. I feel all satisfied that I've gotten everything done... but now there's no space left to add things. And I'm not done. I want to add more things! I set myself up with so many perennial fruits (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc.) that there's very little fiddling with it aside from routine maintenance. I wonder if D will let me rip up more of the yard. . . mwahaha!
I wish there were a close community garden that I could take over, too. Maybe I should usurp my grandmother's garden; rototill it again and go to town. It's the size of a whole lot. Maybe melons. I'd be hard to get back there at the interval needed to maintain, though...and I'd need to install rabbit fences. I just sent an email to my mom and sister asking if they'd put their gardens in yet and offering to help.
I've had to hold myself back from jumping on any little comment/thread relating tangentially to gardening offering unsolicited gardening/plant advice. So if anyone has any questions, let me know, I'd be happy to help! I love that stuff.
