So apparently Matt Smith is bowing out of Doctor Who after Christmas.

I did warm to him a bit and I don't mind him (though I still liked the previous two NuWho Doctors better). . . but I kinda can't wait to see who the next Doctor is going to be.

Girl Doctor? Could be interesting.
Ginger Doctor? He always hoped he would be a ginger.
Non-white Doctor? Possible within the laws of regeneration, so why not?

I'd speculate but I can't think of anyone I'd LOVE to see in the role right now. I just hope they don't make the Doctor even younger (or even as young as Matt Smith).

I am also pretty okay with this. It is always fun to get a new doctor!

I love how each doctor is different in substantial ways.

I think it'd be great if they cast Daniel Day-Lewis as the Doctor, if only to see him method-act his way around in public for a year.

That would be amazing!

Youth sells. :-\

But it's The Doctor! I'm not certain that youth is necessarily an asset in that case. My brit friends want Stephen Fry. :D

I did hear that after David Tennant they intended to cast someone his age or older, but Matt Smith auditioned so impressively that they changed that direction.

I thought I heard he was contracted through 2014, but apparently not.

I'm just kinda warming to him, too.

I'm not familiar enough with the British press to know whether this source is reliable (or how much rampant speculation is reported as news, rather), but it was posted by a Brit-friend who is both reliable and a huge fan.

I got the impression that it was just a rumor. It is certainly unconfirmed, so at this point it is a might-happen, might-not sort of thing.

I've never watched Dr. Who so I have no idea whereof I speak, but if they're going to give the role to a white guy, my vote's for Mark Sheppard. I'd tune in.

Oooh, Badger from Firefly. Very interesting choice.

If we were going older than that, I'd pick Alan Rickman. He wouldn't do it, but it'd be fun to have a droll and condescending doctor.

The last three guys have been pretty non-famous, though. I'm not sure they'd want a big name guy.

Indeed. I think that's part of the allure; the actor just becomes the Doctor because you have little-or-no reference point for their previous work.

Though Brit-friends argue that Eccleston and Tennant were pretty strongly name-recognizable before Doctor Who.
