It's funny how certain things crop up in your life over and over--particularly after they've been brought to your attention. You start to see the world through the filter of those things, and they pop up everywhere.
The Music Man. That insanely brilliant (yet horribly catchy) musical has been in my head for the last MONTH. This is mostly because it has become tradition to sing all or part of the Music Man revue whenever we're on a show with a particular talent. Yeah, we know how to party alright.
Last night on Family Guy, Peter broke into a chorus of Shipoopi and I nearly wet my pants. Don't get me wrong, I'm not usually a fan of Family Guy's random-full-length musical numbers, though it seems like if you're "in" on the joke (as I was with Shipoopi) it's hilarious. That brings me to the new Family Guy. I'm one of the ones that watched Family Guy when it was doing its original non-syndicated run (and I deftly rode through its time zone, station and time slot navigation problems). I was happy--no, ecstatic--when Family Guy rose from obscure re-runs and miraculous DVD sales to new seasons on FOX. However, I'm still of the mind that the "old" Family Guy was FAR less self-conscious than the new Family Guy, and a trifle more "funny." It is riding the popularity of certain characters (read: Stewie) a tad too hard, and is starting to emulate the Simpsons in more ways than one. (Not that it didn't already--mind you--just not as obviously). Speaking of The Simpsons. . . Love the show, but it's time to hire a few new writers (or just throw in the towel already). I still enjoy watching new episodes, but they're...ehhem...getting a tad too contrived and in an odd way, starting to parody themselves. Weird.
And to think, my original post was going to be about atheists dealing with death. *shrug* But how could anything follow Family Guy--after all, it SO doesn't work with American Dad. . . . I guess that bowl-o-sunshine will have to wait.
