Surprise Canoe
Nov. 9th, 2012 11:20 amSo a few days ago I noticed that we had two canoes in our yard. Apparently the second canoe (we already had one) had been there for about a week. I go through the back yard on my way to work every day. I am observant, clearly.
Actually, I DID notice that there was a canoe, but I didn't realize that it was *ours*. You know how it goes. Maybe D was holding it for a friend or something.
But no. We have a second canoe now. Time to return the first one to my dad.
This is how our relationship works. Someone gets a canoe and eventually the other person notices it. D once traded two pieces of camping equipment (that he got as presents and didn't need) for an iPad on CraigsList. A few days later I was all, "Heeeey, where did you get that iPad?"
Then again, when we first bought the house I came down one day and D was surprise-knocking out a wall. I was all, "Oh, so I guess we don't have a wall now. Huh. Take that...wall."
Or there was that time when I came in to find him sawing our brand-new couch in half so it would fit down the stairs. *Shrug* He put it back together again.
I might attribute this nonchalance to my mother's example. She who came home to find her EXTERNAL kitchen wall missing and...went in the house and started making dinner. She who spent her honeymoon putting a surprise basement in the house. I remember going up north for the weekend with my mom and sister and coming home to find a brand-new support beam in the middle of the kitchen where none had been before. At least the floors upstairs didn't creak and sag anymore.
