So this particular script with this particular client has been a bear. It's been an edit-by-committee script, which is frequently just fine. This time, it is not. The person on their end keeps putting things in that I keep taking out and s/he keeps putting back in...and I keep taking out.
After two or three rounds of hide-the-stupidity, I usually just give up and leave the crap in. After all, it is *their* script, they are the client, and my job is, in part, to make them happy.
But I have my limits. You see, there's a place in the script where the girl-who-gets-the-geek has computer jargon rattled off to her. I provided two options after much debate: She can either nod and join in--adding to the conversation with equal level of jargon, or nod and reiterate the information in Layman's terms (i.e. So what you're saying is...).
They want her to giggle and say, "Uh, in English please?" [Please note that this is AFTER she asks for clarification once in the script. So, uh, she really doesn't get it, apparently.]
Because girls are dumb, right? Girls cannot understand "technical" language. Girls cannot know about computers. Tee hee. *growl*
I'm not budging on this one. I will not make one of the lead characters and the only girl in the whole script the "dumb one".
Besides, if she's supposed to get-the-geek in the end, well, what geek wants a stupid girl? Sure, pretty, shallow, dumb girls can be fun for a bit, but if there's no substance they lose their luster quickly. Am I right geeky boys?
*growling at client and taking out the line...again*

Date: 2008-04-22 02:53 pm (UTC)I recently challenged a co-worker on this recently after I caught her playing the "dumb girl" routine and she freely admitted to it with the defense "but it gets things done".
I'm not defending the practice and people who know me know that I personally gravitate towards intelligent women.
