Okay anyone-familiar-with-opera on my f-list (I know there are at least 3 'round here). I need a good opera to yoink music from. I'm thinking Carmen so far, but I'm open to alternate suggestions.

What I'm seeking, essentially, is a piece that is easily recognized to the masses. It must also be easy to parody with English words, within a reasonable range for non-professional singers, and duet-able.

So even if you aren't an opera expert--what would you recognize?

Yeah, this is a shot in the dark. My initial strategy of listening to discs from the library may have to be it.

At first, I thought you meant Opera, but then I realized that I'm a geek. Sorry.

Well you're no help at all... :)

Also consider Madame Butterfly, Barber of Seville and Marriage of Figaro.

Barber of Seville! That's something I didn't pick up. Thanks!

OK, so as a non-opera-listener, I'd say I recognize Barber of Seville and Figaro ... so if you're going for a spoof, I suppose one of those would resonate.
