I just think you all should know that I saw Harry Potter (Movie 5) last night. I'm glad I got that off my chest. I feel like I've done something shameful and naughty. In the middle of a meeting today, I turned to my boss and co-worker (who had been asking me all week if Derrick was going to drag me to the midnight opening) and told them that I felt they should be aware that I saw Harry Potter last night. I couldn't hold it in anymore.

And that's that.

That, and I stole this icon. Giggidy.

Shameful? Are you kidding? I'm so jealous!!!! If loving the Harry Potter movies is wrong, I don't want to be right. But...you didn't say it was good. Was it? My husband won't go see movies in the theater typically because he hates the general public (as do I, but I have better tolerance for them if I really want to see a movie on the big screen), so we will be waiting for this one on DVD. Transformers, however, he was willing to break his rule for, because that one HAD to be seen in the biggest way possible. I was so sad that he didn't think Harry & Crew merited the same respect.

IT TOTALLY ROCKED! I was not at ALL disappointed. There are those who are upset that parts are left out (as they always will be) and that some things are handled differently, but I thought it was incredibly entertaining and wonderful to watch. I was able to just suspend my disbelief entirely and go with it.

Okay, enough of that :) Actually, I think it DOES merit the same big screen respect as Transformers (come on, it's Harry Potter!). Despite my reservations (I have to be the ying to balance out the yang that is my Harry Potter crazy husband) and my hatred of opening night and crowds, it actually wasn't so bad.

To give some background on my reservations when it comes to Harry Potter love: My husband is nuts for Harry Potter. If I go out of town, I can guarantee that he'll watch at least one Harry Potter movie at LEAST once. He does this when I'm gone out of courtesy since, really, I don't need to see them more than 5 times in ONE month. It's kind of like how parents get tired of watching the Lion King for the 451st time. He's read the series from beginning to [the current] end at least 4 or 5 times. If not more.

I have to take a relaxed approach, or our household will descend into Harry Potter chaos.

Aw, I love that. Y'all are cute. My husband is that way with his beloved Star Wars dvd's, and has probably watched Episode 3 a hundred times by now. Even if we're flipping channels and any Star Wars movie is on, he will stop on it and go slack jawed, watching it as attentively as he had the first time.

I am a big fan, but not a fanatic. I am a bit jealous though.

And by the way, the His Dark Materials series is much better than Harry Potter. With luck, the movie they are making of the first book The Golden Compass will not suck. (fingers crossed)

And I can't stop staring at that damn icon. Curse you! ;-)

It's hypnotic :)

I, too, loved the His Dark Materials trilogy (for some reason, Derrick didn't like this series as well). I always end up liking books-to-movies that have come from books I really, really enjoy almost by default... If only because there is such pleasure in simply seeing a character I loved on the screen before me.

I can't wait...

You have such good taste in lit!

Mine is Suidan, the Crow.

Oh, ehhem...

Didja know that HBO has optioned the rights to George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series (and has plans to actually DO something with that option)?

I'm excited about that too...but that's farther away.

Farther away than A Dance with Dragons I'd suspect.

ooooooh, and HBO would probably look at doing it as a series (like Rome), which would be the best way to handle it -- you'd have trouble squeezing A Game of Thrones into a 6 hour movie.

(keep calm keep calm...it's forever before we'll see it...)

btw, have you read any of Bernard Cornwell's work? I'm reading his Arthur series (The Winter King, Enemy of God, & Excalibur) right now and they are well-written, exciting, intelligent, and well-researched. It doesn't have the grandeur of the two series we've been talking about, but they are very good.

I haven't, but I LOVE getting new suggestions for things to read--I'll have to add them to my library queue.

Yeah, ANYtime you have recommendations for books, I'll take them eagerly :)

Then grab The Winter King, I think you will very much enjoy it!
