My co-workers and I were discussing earliest birthday memories today. My first birthday memory was my 2nd birthday.

That seems rather impossible in my own mind (and certainly my co-workers doubted it) until I sort through the details.

I was in my crib in the laundry room which, incidentally, never had a washer/dryer until this last year. I remember the yellow of the morning as the sun came in through the yellow plastic window shades and into the baby-yellow room. It was sort of coolish in the way that May mornings are, and it was very early. I was old enough to stand up in the crib, but still small enough to be sleeping in the crib--in the laundry room. My older sister (who would have been 5 at the time) came into the room to wake me up. I asked her if that day was my birthday--and she said yes. I asked her how old I was--and I don't remember her answering, though I'm sure she did. I remember feeling happy about that--I must have been extensively prepped for my birthday beforehand. My sister picked me up and carried me into the kitchen. She put me in my highchair to eat Cheerios off of the tray.

The crib and the highchair and the laundry room all add up to about 2 years old, though I suppose I could have been turning three instead. However, I do have memories that are even earlier than that--mostly fragments and voices and words and fractions--so it's not entirely inconceivable that I'm recalling correctly.

Anyone have any very early memories--birthday or otherwise?

Hmm, it would seem that childhood behavior is often indicative of adult personality indeed. :)
