Overheard: TSA agent reminding people to put liquids in bags--very conscious of the fact that no one is actually listening to him rattle off the list of items that must be put in a separate ziplock baggie....

"Lip stick is a solid, lip gloss is a liquid. Liquid items include hair gels, sprays, liquid medication, mascara, lotions, peanut butter, honey, jams, jellies and personal lubricants...."

Honey?

Who brings honey as a carry-on item? Really. Well, maybe for tea...but jam? Peanut Butter?

And I've been putting my lipstick in my baggie all this time!

(I really have -- I've been worried that they might qualify as gel-like, and who wants security nabbing their Viva Glam ($17.90)? Not me!)

In the case of expensive cosmetics, it's FAR better to be safe than sorry I'd imagine.

I mean, in theory these things could go in checked luggage, but who wants to get off the plane looking like something the cat regurgitated?

Seriously. And on my last trip -- an audition no less, so requiring the full Diva Thing the next morning -- I only TOOK carry-on baggage. I'm not normally super high-maintenance but you better believe I was stressed about accomplishing Diva Hair/Face out of a ziploc baggie. :D
