Oct. 20th, 2019 08:57 pmLast week was MEA. Nadia had Thursday and Friday off school.
I checked her bag on Wednesday night and found two packs of cereal. I didn't think much of it. Maybe they had extra?
But it just occurred to me. Our school is a free breakfast AND lunch school. They sent home two days of cereal knowing that unless they did that, some kids wouldn't get to eat breakfast on the two days off.
Jesus fucking christ, America.

Date: 2019-10-21 01:32 pm (UTC)I'm glad the school does it too. It seems like: "We can't do a lot, but at least we can do this." I'm also glad they just gave it to all kids regardless of need--because some kids who need it might not take a pack out of embarrassment or not even thinking about it too much if it were at-will (but still...we don't NEED it...).

Date: 2019-10-23 12:25 am (UTC)It makes me so sad, on so many levels. But every parent I know who's kid receives them is so freaking grateful for the boost to the pantry.
We also host breakfast and lunch every week day during the summer, too. The population who attends THAT makes me weep. Those are mostly the kids who have negligent parents. One kid, who's in 8th grade, is a gruff teddy bear of a kid who is tough because it's how he survives his life. He stops by the houses of every kid in the younger grades within the instructional special ed classroom and gets them to come to eat with him. Because there isn't enough food or attentive parents in any of those homes and he knows they won't eat without a friend there.
