A different sort
Dec. 12th, 2017 01:40 pmSometimes I stay in really nice places. Resorts, beachside hotels, etc. I don't get to "enjoy" any of this, since work is work and freetime is non-existent, generally.
Often times there are families staying at the places on vacation. Or the property is a typical vacation spot.
This week I'm in a ski lodge resort in the mountains in Park City, Utah. This is where the Sundance film festival is held. It's pretty posh. There's a fireplace in my room. My three male co-workers are sharing a suite with 3 rooms and a common space (it's like a multi-family vacation time share room...only in a hotel/resort). One of the rooms has FOUR bunk beds!
When I go to these places I try to imagine myself on vacation there. It doesn't much matter if it would be my preferred vacation or not.
What if I were the type of person who went to a ski resort and stayed out all day, came in wet and cold and had hot bourbon drinks by the huge fireplace in the wooded lodge? That would be nice. I could see myself doing that.
What if I were the type of person to stay on the beach. What if I were the type of person to have an all-inclusive Disney resort vacation. What if I were the type of person to gamble and carouse in Vegas.
I think I could adapt to any of these things. My ideal vacationy things (and the vacations I've taken) are European(ish) travel: Montreal, Lithuania, Amsterdam, Prague, Spain, Morocco, GB, etc. Old buildings, museums, sights, libraries, endless walking, great food. Sometimes there's a beach involved, but I don't generally want to spend more than a few hours there. I want to explore a little bit--city or country. If I'm still for too long I get restless. When we went to Mexico with my in-laws we had a very different vacation than they did. They were content to sit by the pool all day, every day and drink slowly and read. I liked that for a few hours, but I definitely wanted to do more. Every day we took really, really long walks all down the beach and back. We explored. We found old ruins and went to the park.
What if I had endless free time here? Would I like it? I don't know. I think I could slip into that role, if need be.
But the $18 charge for a glass of house wine would be...problematic.
