From the looks of horror on peoples' faces when I tell them I don't have air conditioning in my house, you'd think that I had just told them I insulated using the bodies of dead kittens or something. (My parents are slowly amassing enough kittens to do this if I were, you know, evil or something.) Especially on days like today (99 degrees with super-high humidity and a heat index of like a million).
I mean, we have a window a/c unit for our bedroom and a dehumidifying unit for the basement for when we absolutely need them. Retrofitting a 1922 house with central air (in plaster walls...with radiator heat) would be very messy and very expensive. And it only gets "OMG, this is ridiculously hot" (when it doesn't cool down at night enough to be sleepably comfortable) maybe 1-2 weeks a year. Plus, a/c is mostly always too cold feeling for me. Case in point? It's 99 degrees outside, I'm at work (with attendant a/c) and I have my space heater on very low at my feet.
Besides, my momma always taught us that if it's hot, you just wear fewer clothes. I remember many days of my mom going around the house/outside in only a bra and underwear. When it's hot, modesty in your own home is irrelevant and impractical.

Date: 2012-07-02 06:02 pm (UTC)Wait, does this work? Because it's gotta be in the mid 90s in my condo right now, and if I could use dead kittens to keep it cooler, I'd call up the pound in a heartbeat!

I worry about my critters though. I chill marble tiles in the freezer and then put them in their room.
