From the looks of horror on peoples' faces when I tell them I don't have air conditioning in my house, you'd think that I had just told them I insulated using the bodies of dead kittens or something. (My parents are slowly amassing enough kittens to do this if I were, you know, evil or something.) Especially on days like today (99 degrees with super-high humidity and a heat index of like a million).

I mean, we have a window a/c unit for our bedroom and a dehumidifying unit for the basement for when we absolutely need them. Retrofitting a 1922 house with central air (in plaster walls...with radiator heat) would be very messy and very expensive. And it only gets "OMG, this is ridiculously hot" (when it doesn't cool down at night enough to be sleepably comfortable) maybe 1-2 weeks a year. Plus, a/c is mostly always too cold feeling for me. Case in point? It's 99 degrees outside, I'm at work (with attendant a/c) and I have my space heater on very low at my feet.

Besides, my momma always taught us that if it's hot, you just wear fewer clothes. I remember many days of my mom going around the house/outside in only a bra and underwear. When it's hot, modesty in your own home is irrelevant and impractical.

B's old car (which I drive) doesn't have AC. Which is a great excuse to roll down all the windows and drive at 39898437987987 MPH.

In other completely unrelated news...are you inviting anyone over for dinner this week? Sorry, had to ask.

We should *totally* start having, "It's hot and we don't give a f*ck" underwear-only dinners out on the screen porch with friends.

Underwear covers as much (occasionally more) than most swimwear, so what are the neighbors gonna do? Call the cops? Won't work.

insulated using the bodies of dead kittens

Wait, does this work? Because it's gotta be in the mid 90s in my condo right now, and if I could use dead kittens to keep it cooler, I'd call up the pound in a heartbeat!

Maybe the dried hides would be effective, but I would think that the smell of just plain ol' dead kitten bodies would be somewhat prohibitive in this heat/humidity.

Also, kitten adoption is like $150 each kitten. Larger cats (which are cheaper) or, perhaps, puppies would be more cost-effective. And at that point maybe portable a/c units would be less work overall.

Our AC died one year just at the hottest week of the year. You can survive it if you work all day and open the windows at night. Especially if you go down in the basement.

Truefacts. I'm all, "Whatevs, I grew up without a/c...YOU PEOPLE AND YOUR LUXURIES." :)

I hate A/C. I don't have it in my house either, and I don't even have a window unit. I use fans and go pantsless. A great trick is to wear a damp towel around your neck and sit in front of a fan.

At night, I sleep outside on the porch intended for just that!

I worry about my critters though. I chill marble tiles in the freezer and then put them in their room.
