Classy Ball
Apr. 10th, 2011 08:07 pmWe went to the Twins game today with my sister and her new boyfriend. What started out as a perilous day (Oh no! Thunderstorms!) turned out to be gorgeous.
I blame the two big gingers I had before the game for the good weather. When a day starts out with Jameson, can anything go wrong?
We didn't win, but I did get to see Jim Thome hit a two run home run. Man, the fans love him here. The ovation kept standing and standing until they pointed the cameras at Thome in the dugout and then there was jumping and cheering and screaming until he walked out smiling and waved his cap at the fans.
I love it when sportsguys are a class act.
And Minnesota fans are fickle. We love our aw-shucks-gee-wiz players who say things like, "Well, I have a great team behind me," when they're being interviewed for making some great play and are humble and smile and interact with the fans. We have no tolerance for showboating and puffed-up egos. Maybe that's why most people here hate the Yankees so much and so irrationally. (Gosh, they don't *need* to make that much money to play!)

Date: 2011-04-11 02:30 pm (UTC)Baseball bores me to tears--always has--but there's something about a new venue that makes me want to check it out anyway.

Date: 2011-04-11 03:36 pm (UTC)I took my dad (and he feels the same way about baseball that you do) and he had a good time--if only for the novelty of it all.

Date: 2011-04-11 03:38 pm (UTC)I'm glad that most of our players (if not all?) have escaped the whole steroids thing. MN would not only be disgusted and disappointed by such things, but we'd probably be heartbroken that one of "our guys" would do that kind of thing.
Also: I'm glad you guys have Torii Hunter since we can't. He's a stand-up guy (and we still give him standing ovations when he comes to play here).

Date: 2011-04-11 04:05 pm (UTC)I have to do a U of M football game (preferably versus Michigan or Michigan State) for the same reason.
And oh yes, hockey. I've already been to Xcel for Obama's nomination and maybe a mechanical dinosaur show or something, but come on. B's from Canada. CANADA. Not to mention her brother's already flown here to watch a game and he's got an NHL team in his backyard. Oh, the shame. The burning shame. How can I look at myself in a mirror?
