I voted this morning--no lines at my place of votation awesomeness.
And coming in to work, walking around the skyways of Downtown Minneapolis, I feel a secret solidarity with those sporting the bright red "I voted" stickers--displaying proudly that they've already taken the responsibility of citizenship seriously.
We exchange smiles and pleasantries in the elevators.
"How was the line?"
"Have to wait long?"
And I say it's a responsibility, because it is. I don't consider voting a right or a privilege--I consider it a responsibility.
If your boss told you to hire someone to run a division, would you simply not do it? No, because you're responsible for that task. Would you say, "I don't care" and let whomever take the job that directly impacts you? Not if you were a good employee, you wouldn't.
I'm not going to tow the line,"I don't care who you vote for, just vote," because that's a lie. I do care who you vote for. I care deeply.
That's why I voted this morning. It's my responsibility and my opportunity to be a citizen in a country that I'm proud of--and I care. Because really, even though I don't agree with the current administration or a lot of the policies, the fact that we can enact change and speak up with disparate opinions is pretty freaking awesome.
