Grocery Elitist
Sep. 27th, 2008 06:11 pmWhen Derrick is gone, I secretly shop at Byerlys (the expensive grocery store, for non-Minnesotans). I pay more for the same exact things, because I love the shopping experience. I love that I don't feel like I'm shopping in a sticky warehouse. I love that the fruit is always higher-quality than Cub, and is always at the correct stage of ripeness, but rarely bruised. I never find a rotting apple in the middle of the bin at Byerlys.
I love that they bag my groceries for me and take them out to the car, because I cannot tell you how much I hate bagging groceries. I'll admit it. I'll pay extra for them to bag my groceries.
When Derrick's with me, it's not a big deal, because he bags the groceries while I pay. Fair trade off. I figure with as much money as we paid for the wedding and that we re-invest in each other, I have that tip for the grocery bagger covered.
So now, I have a lazy Saturday with raspberries that cost me way too much and a fresh cupcake with butter-cream frosting.
And I realize that I feel f-ing smug...downright superior...about my fresh, perfect produce--brighter and bigger than any raspberries found at Cub--and my creamy, moist, you-can-taste-the-butter cupcake.
It's not an everyday thing--for truly, the sensible Minnesotan in me rails against paying $3.99 for something that is usually $3.49 at the other store--but once in a while, it's a downright treat for me.
