Chayote

Today, I ate this:

[Props to gwangi for calling it to my attention.] It's a Chayote, which sounds kinda naughty. It shall henceforth be known as "green butt fruit" (because, well, LOOK at it). Much better.

llythefaerye and pointedthings will have to back me up on this at some point, but it tastes exactly like being outside in the summer at my parents' house. It's a mixture of green beans from the garden, green bean rinse water, freshly mowed grass, a little bit of pea pod, and some fresh spring leaf buds for good measure. Despite all the seemingly non-edible tastes it conjures in the mouth and mind, it's really not half bad.

I had chayote for the first time a couple of weeks ago - weird! It was in a Mexican restaurant at Epcot, and it was prepared in such a way that it looked and tasted like mashed potatoes. Delicious! I would never have guessed it had looked like a green butt beforehand.

I'll have to try it cooked and mashed.. . I think it might be really good that way with some butter. I was too scared to attempt to cook it on my first tasting experience.

Uncanny! I was reading "The Soul of a Chef" this morning, and in the first part of the book they follow a group of chefs taking the Certification exam to be a Master Chef at the CIA, and one had Chayote on their ingredient list. I had no idea what one was or looked like, so thanks!
