It's the universal tag at the end of a headline to make something that is not inherently interesting, but that you're supposed to think is fascinating, even remotely intriguing.

For instance, on Yahoo! News at the moment: "Chicken in Mexico lays eggs with green shells...and nobody can figure out why."

Yessir, that's our lead story, designed specifically to pull me into the news vortex. Green shelled eggs. I'm getting a whiff of Dr. Seuss, but no real intrigue.

Reporters do this all the time. And nobody knows why.

A very good point, that. So I'm supposed to read their speculation? A run down of the facts? Hmm, let's see: Chicken lays green eggs. That's about all I need to know right there.

You wouldn't have to--everything you need to know is right in the title. Fact : No one knows why : Period. It's wrapped up quite nicely.

I think I'm going to start putting that on the end of everything I write--to give me an air of mystery and intrigue both professionally and personally.
