And Nobody Can Figure out Why...
It's the universal tag at the end of a headline to make something that is not inherently interesting, but that you're supposed to think is fascinating, even remotely intriguing.
For instance, on Yahoo! News at the moment: "Chicken in Mexico lays eggs with green shells...and nobody can figure out why."
Yessir, that's our lead story, designed specifically to pull me into the news vortex. Green shelled eggs. I'm getting a whiff of Dr. Seuss, but no real intrigue.
Reporters do this all the time. And nobody knows why.
