Am I really too young to appreciate oldies?

1. They changed the format of the "oldies" station (KOOL108) in the Twin Cities so that it now plays less 50's & 60's (with some 40's) and more 70's & 80's (with some 60's). This perturbs me greatly. I still want my oldies. 80's is not old--even for someone born in the 80's. I want my Chubby Checker and my Buddy Holly and my Dion. (I also want my Bing Crosby and my Gene Autry and my Fred Astaire, but I think my iPod is my only option for hearing such things....they're not so radio-friendly anymore.)

2. I was scoffed at whilst in the checkout line at Target today. I'm wearing a Beatles hoodie that I got for free (when I couldn't find anything else I liked at JC Penny with my unfortunate store credit). I realize what I look like: I'm a youngish woman with an iPod strapped on her blue jeans wearing a Beatles hoodie. Everything about it screams "hipster" (though really, to know me NOTHING about me screams hipster). His disdain was palatable as he says, "Were you even ALIVE when the Beatles were making music?" I kinda sheepishly smiled and didn't know what to say. So I go with it, "Actually, I wasn't even alive when John Lennon was shot--but I still know the music."

Yeah, it's annoying when people wear stuff just because it's on the shelves (I saw a teen with a Ramones shirt who didn't know what kind of music the Ramones played), but you don't have to be all self righteous about it. I know who the Beatles are, thankyouverymuch, and appreciate their music despite my youth.

I wonder if, in 50 years, I'll look at kids wearing faux-vintage Tom Waits shirts with disdain and annoyance and ask them if they were even ALIVE when Tom Waits was still producing music.

Well, you could wake up for the 60's hour from 6-7am on Saturday. KOOL108 had an advert for that. I'm sure you could have out Beatle trivia-ed him. You also could have told him that your sister went to Liverpool and could beat him up.
